Introduction

Although not officially touring under the Firvale CC banner a number of Firvale players did participate in a tour to Barbados during February 2001. The tour initially consisted of five matches against local opposition, however, Roy Hibbert (tour organiser and captain), decided that a practice match against a touring school's 2nd XI would be in order. We were also let down by one of the local clubs and a game against the school's 1st XI was hastily arranged. So the tour now consisted of six matches, four of these matches against local teams.

Kings School 2nd XI (14th February 2001)

The first match against the Kings school 2nd XI from Grantham England was played at Melbourne in the south west corner of the island. Kings school batted first and were bowled out for 43, Dave Hadley taking 4 wickets in 2.3 overs at a cost of 5 runs and Mark Bowns taking 3 wickets for 6 runs off his 3 overs. In reply Roy's Heroes (guess who thought of that name?) ended up with 107 for 6 as we batted on past the 44 required, the Hibbert's combining with 26 for Roy and 21 for Jon.

Kings School 1st XI (15th February 2001)

The next game was also against the school, this time their first XI which included one of the teachers. After the defeat of their 2nd XI these lads were 'up for it' and for 16/17/18 year old lads they were fairly vocal and not very complimentary. However, they were soon brought down to size as we restricted them to 136 for 7 off their allotted 35 overs. Tight bowling by Graham Shepherd in particular (7 overs 15 runs 3 wickets) and the bowlers in general ensured that even their main batsman (the teacher) had to work hard for his 54 runs. We replied with 138 for 4 with David Needham batting through the innings for an unbeaten 68.

Kings Park (18th February 2001)

Dibber enjoying the moment Two years ago Firvale CC toured Barbados and played against Kings Park and in a never to be forgotten game chasing 128 to win collapsed from 94 for non to 123 for 9 snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. This time round we revisited Kings Park in the hope of putting things right. Unfortunately, things did not go to plan, the home side scoring 193 and our reply being a paltry 56 all out.

Texaco (20th February 2001)

The fourth game was played against Texaco, Roy lost the toss, and within minutes of bowling the first few balls we wondered what had hit us. Their opening bat just hit everything to all parts and raced to 40 odd in no time at all. Thankfully he missed a straight one from Dave Needham and was given LBW by their umpire. We then proceeded to stem the run flow and restricted them to 196 for 6, given their start this was an excellent effort mainly due to good spells from Dave Needham (7 overs 29 runs 2 wickets) and Graham Shepherd (7 overs 30 runs 2 wickets). Once again we struggled with the batting making 118 all out.

Banks Brewery (22nd February 2001)

Banks brewery were our next opponents and immediately we could tell these players were a class above those we had encountered on either tour. Elegant shots sped to the boundary rather than forceful hits that we had seen from our previous opponents. Four of their players passed 50, but we did manage 5 wickets, Mickey Parker taking 3 and Dave Needham 2. Dave was on a Hat-Trick, in walked an elderly looking chap and we thought we had a chance. As it happens this elderly looking chap hit his first three balls for four and proceeded to score 63 runs in no time at all before he retired. It turned out he had been on the fringe of the West Indies test side being kept out by the likes of Weekes, Worrel, Nurse, etc. Banks finished on 281 for 5, once again our reply was weak, 84 all out was all we could muster, 33 of these came from Jon Hibbert.

Lords (24th February 2001)

Mickey savouring the victory Thumbs up from Pat

By this time the rigours of the tour were beginning to tell, strained muscles, hangovers, etc. But we needed a big effort for the last match. This was to be at Lords, again a ground we had visited in 1999 and done fairly well. After the first few overs we all thought 'here we go again' as their opening bat started off like a train. However, Simon Murfin uprooted his middle stump when he was on 35 and we quickly made further inroads. Numbers 9 and 10 put on a good partnership to give us a slight problem toward the end but Roy's bowling changes worked and we managed to bowl them out for 118. All the bowlers did well with Graham Shepherd being the pick taking 4 wickets for 21 runs in his 6 overs. The local sides do not like losing, particularly to touring sides and their bowlers meant business. They released the odd bouncer that whizzed past Roy's head (or Dave's waist). The 'old firm' partnership of Roy (Hibbert) and Dave (Needham) strode to the wicket. By the time Dave hit the winning 6 in the 29th over both openers were shattered but delighted to have knocked off all the runs required, Dave finishing on 64 and Roy 38.
